More than ever, physicians must be responsible
for accurately informing legislators on medical
issues. The Society monitors the activities of local
government and provides input on medical issues.
Delegates from the Society are in contact with the
Missouri State Medical Association which works closely
with legislators.
MSMA, with the other state societies, forms the
American Medical Association, which makes thousands
of contacts with members of Congress and their staffs
each year, as well as nearly 100 contacts with White
House staff annually. When necessary, the AMA takes
legal action on issues critical to the integrity
of the profession.
In 2009, MSMA will be advancing numerous bills, including closing a loophole in Missouri ’s prompt pay law. They will also be fighting a number of anti-physician bills which would expand the scope of practice of non-physician providers and give insurance companies even more leverage in determining how you practice medicine. In the past few years, MSMA has fought tough battles on issues like tort reform and Medicaid physician fees, which have seen a $100 million boost in the past three years.
The Missouri General Assembly Home Page allows
you to track current bills in the House and Senate
as well as view Missouri Revised Statutes. You also
can check out the home pages of the Missouri House
of Representatives and Senate.
During the last several years, SLMMS has made a
commitment to educate the community about the current
health care delivery system. SLMMS also provides
support and educational materials for physicians
and their patients who want to learn more about
managed care issues. Through increased awareness
of the current health care delivery system, the
Society hopes that physicians and patients will
provide the influence needed to ensure that the
doctor-patient relationship remains strong.
Experts speak on areas of concern to doctors --
medical staff bylaws, contract evaluation, guild
formation and ERISA among others.
