Membership

The St. Louis Metropolitan Medical Society membership includes primary care and specialists in all medical specialties and subspecialties in a broad array of practice settings.

Throughout the years, SLMMS has played an important role in bringing together groups of doctors by specialty and assisting in the formation of specialty societies, through which much of the scientific progress of the medical profession has been accomplished.

Female physicians comprise approximately 10 percent of SLMMS membership, reflecting not only the growing number of women in the medical profession, but the Societys active role in encouraging the participation of women. Carol Williams, MD, served as the first SLMMS female president in 1986 and K. Lynne Moritz, MD, as the second in 1998.

Member Benefits

  • Representation - Represents physicians views to the print and broadcast media, community organizations and the public.
  • Patient advocacy - The society is committed to educating physicians and the community about the current health care delivery system.
  • Legislative Efforts - A prime example is HB 335, the sweeping managed care reform bill, which was given final approval in the 1997 legislative session and was signed into law by the governor. Though vastly outspent by the insurance industry, organized medicine had the right message which has been in the works for many years through the Patient Fairness Act.
  • SLOW Pay Issues - SLMMS serves as a voice and buffer for members who have documented evidence of problems created by managed care and other insurance companies.
  • Organized Medical Staff Issues - Representatives of SLMMS, MSMA and AMA assist members with organized medical staff issues.
  • Guidelines - Documentation Guidelines for Evaluation and Management Services. SLMMS has addressed Medicare E&M code concerns on many levels and many times.
  • Media Source Program - Provides a creditable media source program for member views through Sage Marketing.
